Norsk Elektro Optikk expands to Europe with new office in Berlin
Norsk Elektro Optikk AS (NEO), a leading payload provider of high-performance hyperspectral imaging systems, has signed a contract with the European Space Agency (ESA) to complete the design and manufacturing of HyperNOR S-1280, the first spaceborne instrument in the HySpex HyperNOR family. The next-generation in-orbit hyperspectral demonstrator is designed to unlock the full potential of extended Short-Wave Infrared (eSWIR, 950–2500 nm) imaging from space.
The HyperNOR S -1280 instrument is being realised under ESAs General Support Technology Programme (GSTP), with support from the Norwegian Space Agency (NOSA). The contract enables a complete payload development pathway—from Qualification Model (QM) to Flight Model (FM), culminating in launch as an In-Orbit Demonstrator (IOD) in the first half of 2028. By combining qualification, flight readiness, and in-orbit validation within a single framework, GSTP accelerates the transition of HySpex’s proven hyperspectral sensor technology from airborne and laboratory domains into space, while reducing risk and establishing a robust foundation for future operational missions and constellations.
HyperNOR S-1280 represents a significant advancement in hyperspectral Earth observation. As an ESA-supported GSTP/IOD mission, it is designed to close the commercial eSWIR gap in space-based imaging, enabling a new generation of high-impact applications for downstream providers.

Norsk Elektro Optikk (NEO) is pleased to announce the opening of HySpex GmbH, a new office located in Berlin, Germany, designed to serve as a sales and support hub for customers throughout the EU. This strategic expansion aims to strengthen NEO’s European presence and deliver enhanced service to both new and existing clients across the region.
“HySpex has a well-established network across Europe, and our EU office will enable us to better reach and support customers on-site,” says Lukasz Paluchowski, Sales Channel Manager for HySpex.
Hallvard Skjerping, CCO of NEO, adds, “We’ve already witnessed the positive impact of local support for our clients through HySpex Inc, our office in the US. This new office will help us build on that success.”
The EU office will be headed by Dr. Andreas Eisele and Dr. Maximillian Brell, both bringing extensive experience from corporate and academic sectors in hyperspectral imaging. “Having worked with NEO and used HySpex cameras in the past, we’re thrilled to join forces and contribute to HySpex’s strategic future,” says Dr. Eisele.
In addition to supporting traditional market segments, HySpex GmbH will also focus on expanding HySpex’s role as an OEM provider for industrial suppliers and exploring new opportunities within the space industry. Dr. Brell, with his extensive expertise in spaceborne hyperspectral satellite missions, will play a pivotal role in supporting NEO and HySpex in this promising new venture.
